Orthodontics Q & A

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a field of dentistry focused on the improvement of tooth alignment. The most common devices used in orthodontics are braces, spacers, and retainers.

How old should patients be when they get braces?

The age at which a patient should begin orthodontic treatment varies. In general, braces aren’t appropriate for young children. Dr. Ebrahimi can tell each patient whether they will benefit from orthodontic treatment and when this treatment should begin. There is no upper age limit on orthodontic treatment.

Is orthodontic treatment painful?

Patients may experience some temporary discomfort when Dr. Ebrahimi adjusts their braces. However, patients can use over-the-counter pain relievers to alleviate any soreness. Patients can also use wax to prevent sharp edges of the braces from irritating the cheeks or gums.

How long do patients need to wear braces?

Every patient’s case is different. While some patients may need braces for only 6 months, others may need to wear braces for up to 3 years before they achieve the desired result. Dr. Ebrahimi will be able to estimate the amount of time required for treatment based on the current condition of the patient’s teeth.

How much will orthodontic treatment cost?

The cost of orthodontic treatment varies considerably based on the patient’s condition when treatment begins, the length of time required for treatment, and other factors. Dr. Ebrahimi will be able to provide patients with a detailed quote that explains the full cost of their treatment before the process begins.

Do all patients need a retainer?

Most patients will need a temporary and/or permanent retainer. The purpose of this device is to hold the teeth in place and prevent them from shifting after treatment is complete. While temporary retainers are usually removable, a permanent retainer is placed behind the patient’s teeth. Permanent retainers aren’t visible to others.

What can patients do to ensure that orthodontic treatment is a success?

Patients can improve the success of orthodontic treatment by following all of Dr. Ebrahimi’s instructions throughout the treatment process. Patients should avoid foods that could damage the braces, such as taffy and gum. Patients should also brush and floss each day, and have regularly scheduled dental checkups.
