Let’s Celebrate National Flossing Day!
While retailers all across the country are preparing for Black Friday, which is the busiest shopping day of the year, we are getting ready for a little-known holiday, National Flossing Day! National Flossing Day was established in 2000 and is always celebrated the day after Thanksgiving. This special day is dedicated to the importance of flossing your teeth and raising awareness about proper oral hygiene for your teeth and gums.
Why Do We Floss?
Each time we eat, there are particles of food that linger in the mouth and make their way between the teeth and along the gumline. Eventually, this food will develop into bacteria that can eat away at the tooth enamel and irritate the gums, leading to tooth decay and gum disease. While brushing your teeth thoroughly for two minutes twice daily will help remove some of the bacteria, it is impossible to reach all the nooks and crannies between the teeth. Flossing is necessary to remove lingering food and bacteria that remain between the teeth and along the gumline even after brushing. We recommend that patients floss a minimum of once a day. It is best to floss along with your nightly brushing.
Aside from flossing, one of the best ways to ensure optimal oral health is to maintain routine oral hygiene examinations and cleanings. If it has been some time since we have seen you and your loved ones, now is the perfect time to schedule an appointment. You can use any dental insurance benefits you have remaining before they reset in January. We also recommend scheduling any restorative treatment appointments we may have recommended in a previous appointment.
If you have any questions about how to floss or want to learn about products that we recommend, please contact us at our office, which is located in Houston, TX. We hope you have a fabulous time flossing away, and we look forward to your next appointment.
