IV sedation is one of several sedation options we offer at Muse Dental Studio. For patients who have extreme anxiety or for patients who require a long or complex procedure (e.g. dental implant surgery), this is often the best choice. It is very safe and effective and administered by a highly skilled anesthesiologist Dr. Amer A. Quaddoura. He constantly monitors patients during anesthesia to make sure everything goes just as it should. If you’re curious about whether IV sedation might be for you, contact us today.

How IV Sedation can help with dental anxiety
According to the ADA’s report “Oral Health and Well-Being in the United States”, 22% of people surveyed said they hadn’t visited the dentist in over a year because they are afraid. This fear can be the result of many things, including:
- A traumatic dental experience
- Fear of needles or dental drills
- Bad experience coming out of sedation
- Hypersensitivity to sounds and smells
Delaying dental care can lead to major health issues: tooth loss, infection, oral cancer, and more. Even if you never develop a serious problem, failure to see a dentist when needed could mean years of expensive dental work down the road.
IV sedation, administered by a qualified professional, puts patients in a relaxed state that allows the dentist to provide the care they want and need without experiencing any pain or anxiety.
Meet Dr. Quaddoura
Dr. Quaddoura is a board-certified anesthesiologist who specializes in eliminating dental fear and completing painless procedures. After receiving his medical degree from the Damascus University Faculty of Medicine, he completed his residency in 2000 at The University of Maryland before completing a Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the same university in 2001.
Providing anesthesia, pain management, and critical care treatment since 2001, he continually advocates for patient safety. After relocating from Philadelphia to Houston, Dr. Quaddoura partnered with Muse Dental Studio to ensure patients dealing with severe dental anxiety and fear receive the best quality care possible.
How IV Sedation works and its benefits
Step 1: Before your appointment, you will need to ensure your stomach is empty by not eating or drinking for a specified amount of time. We will provide detailed instructions regarding what you should and should not do prior to your appointment (i.e. taking medications, eating, drinking, etc.).
Step 2: Dr. Quaddoura will greet you and place an IV through which the sedation will be given. The medication works quickly, so you will feel completely relaxed soon after the IV is placed.
Step 3: Throughout the procedure, Dr. Quaddoura will closely monitor you and adjust the dosage levels if necessary so that you stay relaxed and very comfortable. You will not be completely asleep and will still be able to hear and understand basic commands from our dental team.
Step 4: Once the procedure is over and the IV is removed, the effects of the sedation will wear off quickly. However, you will not be able to drive. You will need have someone escort you home
This type of sedation method offers many great benefits, some of which include:
- It is a safe and effective method of sedation
- Results are fast, and you feel comfortable and relaxed
- You can breathe on your own, and it will not affect your body processes
- If you require extensive dental care, IV sedation makes it possible for us to perform multiple procedures at once
- There is less discomfort after the procedure is complete
- You remain unaware of the sights, smells, and sounds associated with your dental treatment
