Temporomandibular Joint Disorder
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are issues that arise from problems with the jaw joints, and face muscles. You may also have heard the term TMJ, which stands for the temporomandibular joint. This is the joint that attaches your skull to your jawbone. It acts like a hinge and works along with the jaw muscles to allow you to move your mouth when eating, swallowing, and speaking. When the joint is not functioning properly, it can greatly affect a patient’s oral health and day-to-day comfort.
TMD Symptoms
TMD is a unique condition in which every patient affected may be experiencing different symptoms. It is not uncommon for TMD sufferers to experience:
- Jaw that can feel stuck and difficult to open and close
- Clicking or popping sound while opening mouth or eating
- Discomfort in the jaw area or aching facial pain
- Difficulty chewing and swallowing
- Headaches
How We Can Help
Examining for TMD is part of every hygiene examination. If a patient mentions a concern or we notice warning signs, we will complete an examination, including various tests, scans, and X-rays of the joint so we can determine the appropriate treatment. We will also examine the bite to decide if that is a symptom that needs correcting. We will determine if a mouthpiece or other type of hardware is required.
If TMD conditions are not treated, the symptoms could increase and become more severe over time. If you live in or around the Houston, TX area and are experiencing any of these symptoms or are interested in learning more about TMD, please contact our office today. We look forward to seeing you soon.
