What is TMD?
TMD, also known as temporomandibular joint disorder, is a common condition that affects the face muscles and the joint that connects your jawbone to your skull. It often remains untreated because many of the symptoms mimic those of other issues. People often visit other medical professionals and are confused when the treatment plan is unsuccessful. If you experience any of the following symptoms, there is a chance you have TMD:
- Frequent headaches
- Jaw pain and facial discomfort
- Difficulty chewing and swallowing
- Jaw that feels stuck
- Ear discomfort or ringing in the ears
Importance of Treating TMD
Being that so many patients remain undiagnosed, there is a large percentage of those suffering from TMD who are not receiving treatment. Untreated TMD can negatively impact your quality of life. Patients often live with pain every day and have difficulty opening their mouths wide and chewing certain foods. Your condition will continue to worsen until you get treatment. The temporomandibular joint is just like any other joint in your body and will continue to wear down when there is a problem. It is similar to experiencing a problem with your knees or hips.
